Once the session is booked, the first question I am asked is “What should we wear?” So I thought I would make this post so you would have some ideas to get you pointed in the right direction.

My favorite tip is to choose a color palette and have everyone stay within the palette choice. This works especially well when organizing an extended family shoot with lots of people. Making color coordination super simple when you are not in charge of selecting everyone’s outfits.  I have included a few color palette ideas to get your wheels turning.  Simply choose one and send it to everyone in your group and have them select their clothing from your palette choice. Don’t like any of these? Just google “color palette family portraits” and pick one you are looking for. While you’re at it, you can even pick one out to match your living room so that your wall portrait will match your decor!! 

When working with a smaller family unit, a more creative option is to have one or two patterns in the group and everyone else pull colors from those patterns.

For the ladies, choose unique necklines that flatter the individual rather than having everyone in the same style or shirt or dress. 

Put the ladies in one color and the guys in a contrasting color. 

If a traditional classic look is what you are looking for, keep everyone in white and khaki.

Add interesting details by using headbands, jewelry and scarves. 

Wear colors that compliment the sunset. Think about lavendar, peach, pinks and blues.

For girls sessions, I don’t think you can ever go wrong with little white dresses! 

Feel free to bring props to your session to make your pictures as unique as your family!
